Think Like A Champion

One of the most important parts of having a healthy, fulfilling, successful and joyful life is your attitude towards it. Its so easy in today’s world to forget your own greatness. I know I have experienced this, and I am sure others who read this may have as well. And I have noticed, at least within myself, that forgetting my own greatness has affected my motivation, my belief in myself, my confidence and my general happiness. And because I have felt this way, I felt it necessary to write a post to remind everyone including myself of the greatness within all of us.

Motivation for the New Year

A lot of us face pressure, whether it be from parents, a spouse, a significant other, work, friends, finances, etc. We all deal with a lot of pressure on a day to day basis, and sometimes, that pressure can really build up into negative energy. Needless to say, I have been guilty of letting out this negative energy sometimes in the most unhealthy ways, from lashing out at the ones I love, to eating nasty foods and destroying my body. None of which I would recommend or suggest to anyone.

Now being that it is a new year, I want to make a commitment to myself and the ones I love to have the strong positive attitude which allows me to remember that I am a champion and that every positive action I take creates a positive reaction to the world. Its something which we all often forget, getting lost in the daily troubles of our day to day lives. But one thing always remains constant…well constant to me, that as the days go on, I am blessed to have a life where I am healthy, loved and alive. And so long as I am alive, I see no reason to be unhappy. Life flashes by so quickly, if we spend it unhappy, we never get to experience the joys of the world. But how do we do this? How is it that I stay happy? Thats always the biggest question and the biggest struggle. Here is what has worked for me:

NEVER DIET: Dieting in my mind is the craziest concept in the world. In the new year, you see all these advertisements encouraging people to get in shape with some sort of crazy gimmick. Whether it be a new weight loss formula, new “system” and even new machines which “eliminate the need to workout”. Lets make this simple people, if you want to be healthy, I’m all for it. But don’t choose a gimmick, choose a healthy lifestyle. Instead of a diet plan, choose a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy not only improves your waistline, it is good for your skin, its good for your heart, its good for your mood, its gives you more energy, lets you think clearer and lets you live a longer healthier life. So this year, if you resolve to get into shape, get into a healthy lifestyle, drink less alcohol and more water! Eat less junk and more veggies! You owe it to yourself!

WORK HARD: I know this seems strange to put here. But the only way we can truly say that we have done our best is when we work our hardest towards ANYTHING WE DO. What ever you do strive to BE YOUR BEST. Whether it’s a new workout program you are beginning, creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself, or if its doing your best work at your career. No matter what you do, work your hardest at being the best at what you do, people notice. And if nothing else, at least you have the satisfaction that no one can say you have not been your best. And when you do your work, remember, this work you are doing, its not for anyone else to succeed, everything you do for yourself will improve your life and the lives of those around you. Remember, every positive action creates a positive reaction.

The beautiful woman on the left is my fiancé, Nirmita Shukla, the most beautiful woman in the world.

SLEEP: I can’t stress this enough, your body needs rest, take it. Make room for silence and take time to relax. People get so wrapped up in working so hard they forget to rest. Remember, the work you are working on, it can wait for you to rest. The best way to be your most productive is to sleep each day for 6 to 8 hours. So do it! And I am sure you will be more productive in your day!

SMILE: This is simple, when you smile you feel good, others around you feel good. It’s simple, it makes you look more attractive, it doesn’t cost anything and it makes everyone feel good. So do it!

LOVE: Yes, for all you skeptics, it does exist. Please everyone, remember, being friendly, sharing smiles, laughs and making new friends is all a form of love. Let it flow. Let’s spread the love so that everyone in the world has the urge to make a positive change in the world. If everyone loved a little more, maybe we could conquer the problems of global poverty and starvation. Yes, its a lofty dream but I think if we all spread a little more love, we will have more ideas on how we can improve the condition of the world and who knows, that little bit of love that we spread, could inspire someone to change the world.

By the way, I just got engaged officially. I proposed to my fiancé on July 25th, 2011 and we had the official Hindu Ceremony on December 17th, 2011. I am so lucky to have such a beautiful fiancé. I am so excited to make her my wife and live my life everyday with her by my side. She always reminds me of how great I am and believes in me. She is one of the smartest people I have ever met and probably the most talented and passionate person to ever walk this earth. I love her with every part of my being. She is definitely my soulmate. And on top of everything, she is so amazingly gorgeous.

I hope this has helped someone, I hope this strikes a cord with you who read my blog. I hope if nothing else that this post brought a smile to your face. If ever you need a person to remind you of your greatness, talk to me. I wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year, immense success and great happiness.

Free 25 Minute Cardio Mix!

I know a lot of the people who visit this blog frequently like to listen to music and the mixes which I create. So I thought I would provide all of you visitors a 24 minute mix of music which I use when I am doing cardio as well as let you know why this will enhance your workout!

I will be the first person to admit that doing cardio as much as I do, is hard. It’s always a process which starts with me whining about having to do cardio and then when i finally do it I end up not enjoying it at all. But over the past few years I have come up with a few tricks which have helped me not get bored with my cardio routines which I have listed below.

Switch It Up!

  • A lot of times, people get bored because all they do is the same exercise over and over again. The best way to get past this problem is simply switch up your cardio workouts every week! By switching out your cardio routines each week, you will not only get to experience something which is a different in terms of cardio, but this will also allow you to train muscles which you may not be using during your typical cardio routines. For example: If you are a runner, one great way to change things up is after a week of running try an exercise such as swimming. While running primarily challenges your leg strength, swimming will allow you to use all your muscles at once. This is a great way to improve your endurance and also keep your cardio training fresh so you dont get bored.

Join A Competition!

  • Sometimes its hard for people to stay motivated to do cardiovascular training. I have been in this situation and gotten lazy with my cardio training. The

Training for competitions can help motivate you in your cardio training!

way I got re-energized to do my cardio routines was to enroll in a competition such as a 5k, the jailbreak run, the warrior dash and other competitions which allow you to have fun and train with your friends. If you have a moment check out the local 5k’s and other competitions happening in your area, chances are a lot of them are supporting charities as well. So go out there compete and train hard and help someone at the same time!

High Intensitiy Interval Training (HIIT)!

  • A good number of people who I have trained have told me they hate cardio because the session gets really boring. Here is a way to spice it up. Interval training is one of the BEST ways to burn fat. What HIIT does is constantly challenges your body to perform at a moderate rate and then switch to an extremely high intensity level which allows your body to consistently be working and challenged. I have included a sample routine below, try it out! By the end of the session if you are not drenched in sweat and feeling amazing, you are doing something wrong! One thing to be aware of though, don’t perform these HIIT exercises every day! Try once a week, and then progress more when you feel stronger.
  • Sample HIIT Cardio Routine:

Total time = 20 minutes

8 minute warm up jog so you break a sweat (6.0 mph on a treadmill)
30 second sprint at your maximal effort (9-10 mph on a treadmill)
30 second quick paced jog (7 mph)
The above two 30 second intervals are cycled 7-8 times until you get to the 15 or 16 minute mark
4-5minutes cool down jog (5.0 mph on treadmill)

Music for Motivation!

  • Lastly, one of the things which has helped me out quite a bit is adding music to my workouts. Cardio can become boring if say you are running on a treadmill or on an elliptical, sometimes your just sitting there waiting for the session to be over. I have noticed that adding music to my workouts has significantly improved my workouts in 2 ways: 1. I enjoy what I am doing much more. 2. I don’t focus as much on getting done with the exercise but rather on how much I enjoy the music. For that reason I have put together a quick 25 minute mix for your cardio routine. Check out the mix HERE,  let me know what you think and also enjoy your workouts! If you need any advice or any information from

Benefits and Pitfalls of a High Protein Diet

It seems to be that a lot of people who are on a weight loss journey, seem to think that “low carb diets” are the way to go. While this is true, there can be some pitfalls which are encountered when entering into a low carb diet. I wanted to go ahead and address the issues which I have seen become a problem with low carb diets as well as high protein diets as well as the benefits which can arise from a high protein diet.

Benefits of High Protein Diet

Through my fitness journey, I have had my fair share of failed high protein diets. I thought that getting high protein from any source was acceptable. I used to eat at taco bell, and chuys and pizza hut and all the places where I thought I could get the protein necessary for my weight goals. I was horribly wrong, its not only how much protein you intake but also the quality of it. A high quality protein rich diet can have many benefits some of which include ,excellerated weight loss, retention of muscle mass, smaller waistline, etc. Many things which are desired by a lot of people who are at any point in their fitness journey.

So the most important thing to remember is to structure your diet correctly. A good high protein diet will break down typically in this format.

  • 50% Protien
  • 30% Carbohydrates
  • 20% Fats

Now you should structure this diet so that in the morning you get a good mix of carbs and protein to sustain yourself through the day, breakfast is the most important and usually the biggest meal of the day in this diet. Try and break your meals out into 5 or 6 small meals through out the day. This allows your body to continuously metabolize small quantities of food more regularly which keeps your body burning the fuel you are feeding it. Here is a good example of a breakdown of a high protein meal for someone who is a Vegetarian and has not got more than 5 min to make each meal.

  • Breakfast: Quaker Instant Oatmeal, 4 egg scramble
  • Snack: Protein Shake (1.5 scoops of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey) + Apple
  • Lunch: Protein Shake (1.5 scoops of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey) + Morning Star – Chicken Patty
  • Snack: Protein Shake (1.5 scoops of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey)
  • Dinner: Steamed Veggies (1 cup)  + 4 egg whites omlette + Yoplait Yogurt
  • Snack: Casein Shake (1 Scoop of Optimum Nutrition Casein Protein)

Now I understand that calculating out all the calories you consume in a day is quite a taxing affair, and its not easy to maintain, but if your boring like I am, you can maintain the same meal plan day to day and get the exact proportions in each meal. This meal plan which is listed above is a good 50% protien, 30% carbohydrates, and 20% Fats.

Pitfalls of High Protien Diets

While high protein diets are definitely beneficial in short term practices, I wanted to stress the importance of not doing high protein diets for more than 30 days consistently, the results can sometimes cause more harm than good. I myself have experienced the pitfalls of a high protein diet and therefore thought it necessary to warn others who may try using this diet of the negative side effects which can be caused by prolonged use of high protein diets.

There have been countless studies done on high protein diets and their effect on the human body. And some of the ones which I feel are most important are its affect on mood, concentration and energy. I found a study by the Mayo clinic which said that high protein diets can lead to depression, lower levels of concentration and low energy levels which may lead to feeling more sleepy, lethargic, and sluggish through out the day. Being aware of the side effects and knowing when you are starting to experience them is something which everyone on a high protein diet should be aware of. And if you do start experiencing those side effects, ingest some more carbohydrates.

If you do take on a high protein diet, I encourage you not use it for more than 30 days at a time. But used in short periods, high protein diets can be ideal for fat loss but prolonged use can affect depression and other side effects.

As always, if you found this helpful let me know and if there is anything else you want to hear about let me know! Would love to help anyone I can!
